i both like and dislike holidays.
the like:
some of them bring in the customers who will drink, party, dance, and just wanna have fun. (see youtube video. was a good night!) any excuse for a party?
the dislike:
some of them dont bring in customers - they stay at home for it - and people who do come out just stand around doing nothing, dont spend much money, and end up leaving cause they're not having fun.
but even the good holiday nights are aggravating sometimes. new faces, oddball requests from people who've never been there before, requests for the same song to be played over and over ("but we just got here!") like i should have sympathy for someone who's been out at another bar all night and finally decides to come out to our club?
i like nights to go smoothly, so that people dont have an excuse to fight or get stupid. nights that throw my timing off are just aggravating. notice i said timing not scheduling? there is a difference. its like comedic timing - you want the punchline to hit with the most effect. well, i want the music i play to do the same thing.
doesnt help when the people who arent dj's keep trying to tell me how to do the job.
my favorite quote of the week - "i never tell you what to play!" and the very next night he sends me a text to play a song.
fun.

a rant? yeah, kinda.
let me get this right, cause hey i could be wrong...
an analogy: if i go to a steakhouse and order a ribeye, baked potato, and a salad and they give me a hamburger steak, fries, and a piece of lettuce, that's the same thing? i'm not gonna be pissed and complain or leave and not come back?
if a customer comes in and asks for a song, i'm supposed to play a different song and thats gonna be fine with them? because you're tired of hearing it?... because you don't like the song or that type of music?
less than 1% of the requests i get are for rock but i should play it?
we lost over half the customers that were in there in less than 30 minutes. this just doesnt make sense. but of course what do i know.

a month between posts. lazy me.
competition in the local bar industry, deployed troops, cost of living, and other things going on.
it's like we're fighting this big uphill climb to keep things going. and believe me i'm trying. but how the hell do i get it done with what i have to work with? i dunno.
good news is we've got a concert on the way, http://www.kevinfowler.com/ in november. but after that i dunno.
its also been kinda weird lately. people asking for stuff that they should know NO ONE is gonna be dumb enough to play in a club that size. "the hamster dance"? seriously? and i'm supposed to be "nice" to the customers and make everyone happy as much as i can. i'm getting cussed out, complained at, flipped off, told i suck, told the club sucks, and worst of all - losing customers. and there ain't a damn thing i can do about it.
its an excersize in futility, sometimes u just want to hang it up and go elsewhere, but there's no place to go.
dunno what to do... again.

the ups and downs of things and stuff
yeah its been awhile but i been busy. busy at work, trying to de-stress at home and not succeeding, trying to keep head above water and mostly doing it too. work still work, only more so. stressing over the wrong things and making decisions that arent exactly workin for us from what i've seen. gotta hold them in the building longer if you want to make that money... right?
meh.
allergy season - keeping a medicine cabinests worth of stuff with me all the time now and not staying ahead of it. eye looks icky, chest and sinuses congested, headaches, sore from all the coughing from the post-nasal drip. thinkin' bout allergy shots. supposed to be more effective, and this crap is really making work rough. ears stuffed up and everything sounds muffled on the soundsystem.
when life is handing you lemons.. make sure you have a backup plan. guess i should have one of those.
