ours was kinda blah. but for some reason or other people came out to party and have a good time on sunday. some had too good a time and some had such a good time they got punched. wheee!
now on wednesday night, someone flipped a switch and said - lets get everyone out to the club tonight and party. we had a pretty good wet t-shirt contest, a decent turn-out for the pool tourney, and i played a dance set that big daddy would have liked.. (i hope. miss you bro!) good grief charley brown. i feel kinda drained after tonight. it was that good. oh well.. there's always thursday. i could use the rest.
and oh yeah, new years eve - BRING A HELMET!

Merry Christmas, Happy Chanuka, Happy Kwanzaa, Season's Greetings... etc...
yeah, all that and more.Christmas week in the bar business - blah!
Wednesday - not great.. not bad. not enough for the wet t-shirt contest, but enough for the pool tourny. was an okay crowd for the most part.
Thursday - what?.. people?.. how do i handle this?
Friday - Christmas Eve. looked like a recent thursday night. and here's a question.. why would you want to get thrown out of a bar on Christmas eve? JACKASS! oh well, we closed early enough to get the presents out.
later kids, and really...

NOW WHAT?
This has been an incredible week... Last week wednesday, right after the wet t-shirt contest, my partner in crime quit. there was a dis-agreement between him and the management / owners, and he had just had enough and quit.
So now what?
i don't know, but now i have to take up the load and carry on with the job. i would love to sit her all day and discuss it, but without putting things in her that would end up with me getting sued, i really cant go into details.
thursday - SSDD
friday - good night, good crowd, maybe another dj coming in, but he's not sure yet, and people dancing til 3am
saturday - not as busy as we thought it was going to be but busy enough. not exactly a well behaved crowd, but we got it taken care of.
sunday - welcome to the jukebox... cause thats what it felt like... except for the quarters being stuck in my ass. i could have come out ahead if they had...
we'll see how this week goes. cross your fingers.

bad day... bad night.
sunday was a joke. we wont go there. even though it had its moments.
wednesday - start the day off with some personal stuff that just sucks the life out of you, then go to work and deal with a bunch of non-dancing, non-tipping, but drinking like fish customers. follow that up with cranky employees, one of whom quit (AND A MERRY CHRISTMAS...), and then lets all have headaches and oh yeah, just for giggles lets have a toothache. remember all those times when you said that being a dj was cool and a lot of fun? BITE ME!
why cant we all just get along? cause we dont want to i guess.
i need a vacation. anyone want to loan me an island in the south pacific? say for about 2-3 months? all expenses paid?

christmas music... do we really have to play it or can we play scrooge?

and so the weekend is upon us again
this job is not really that demanding. the hell it aint. just look up all those studies that link mental stress and creativity with physical reactions. might be why i've had a headache for the last 2 days. (and no - its not a migraine. i know the difference) kinda slow for a friday but thats to be expected in december - tis the season to got shopping, blah blah blah. just have to hope they remember to de-stress at the club after shopping. other than that a normal friday night.

if i seem a little distracted...
wednesday - must be the "other" holiday season. you know the one, where everyone is broke. slower than normal on a wednesday, but still managed to have tourny and wet t-shirt contest.
thursday - also known as "like i need another reason to lock and load" night. we may never talk about thursdays again. yeah. it was that bad.

the importance of proper nutrition to the average dj
1. - its important. not gonna happen most of the time. but its important. 3 sloppy joe sandwiches right before work = BAD IDEA. www.rolaids.com was my favorite site on sunday night.
other than that, saturday was typical, kinda fun, big crowd, lots of party mood, one minor scuffle. sweet.

GOOD MORNING SUNSHINE!
hehehe.. inside joke
not a bad friday night, a little slow from the holiday travelers not being there, but not bad at all. except: if you're gonna fight, do it like a man. throwing a punch will get you thrown out. using a beer bottle will get you a cell with someone much bigger than you are and a years supply of vaseline. DUMB ASS! other than that incident, tonight was fairly calm. lots of dancin, lots of drinkin - just the way we like it. see ya tomorrow.

love those holidays
so we had a nice wednesday night even though many were out of town for the holiday, and it wasnt a bad wet t-shirt contest, but later in the evening we did have a few miscreants who just had to spoil things for a few people. its amazing how many people just have to cause problems when there's no need. just walk away. thats all it takes.
now thursday (HAPPY TURKEY DAY!)started out like most thursdays have been for the last few months, but it ended up being okay after all. i still had people dancing at 3AM so it all worked out. first dance set of the night was kinda blah even for a thursday, but the second was a bit better. havent played one that long on a thursday in quite a while (and apparently it was okay, i got some compliments afterwards). the crowd took awhile to warm up but they did get into a party mood later in the evening. guess they realized they didnt have to get up in the morning like alot of other people. all in all it was not as traumatic as most thursdays.
and now a word about requests. we like requests, really. they let us know people are actually listening, and actively participating in the club. its good input so that we know what songs are gaining popularity and which ones are still current in people's minds. but its not always a good thing. especially if you are going to ask for the same songs night after night after night. sure you have a favorite song - but dont expect to hear it every night, every time you decide to show up, every time you have some drama, or every time you think you need to hear it. be patient and you might hear the song. if not that night, then maybe the next. your song is special TO YOU. not to the DJ. that being said, come out to dance and have a good time, and if you want to make a request you're more than welcome to. but try to remember - annoying the person you want to play the song for you is not always a good idea.
TOP TEN things you should not say to a DJ By Unknown Author
1. PLAY SOMETHING GOOD...SOMETHING WE CAN DANCE TO!
The DJ has to play for more than one person...so what you hate may be another's favorite song and EVERYTHING played here can be danced to one way or another.
2. WOULD YOU PLAY SOMETHING WITH A "BEAT"
BE SERIOUS! We know of NO songs played in a club that don't have some sort of BEAT!
3. I DON'T KNOW WHO SINGS IT AND I DON'T KNOW THE NAME OF THE SONG, BUT IT GOES LIKE THIS....
PLEASE don't sing for the DJ. They have to put up with smoke filled rooms and dangerous decibel levels all night long...Do them a favor and DON'T give them a rendition of your favorite song.
4. EVERYBODY WANTS TO HEAR IT!
Oh, sure ... you polled everyone in the club and, as their spokesperson, you're requesting the song.
5. EVERYBODY WILL DANCE IF YOU PLAY IT!
The DJ won't. I guess that blows a hole in that theory!
6. I CAN GET LAID IF YOU PLAY IT!
Why settle for one night? Buy the album and get laid for a whole month!
7. I WANT TO HEAR IT NEXT!
The ONLY people who can get away with that statement write the DJ's paycheck!
8. WHAT DO YOU HAVE?
It's a lot easier for you to go have another beer and figure out what you want to hear than it is for the DJ to recite the name of every record in the booth!
9. HEY, MAN, NOBODY CAN DANCE TO THIS!
It's NOT advisable to say this when the dance floor is packed (but some people do anyway) ! HOWEVER, even if there is only ONE person on the floor, it STILL contradicts the statement!
10. PLAY IT SOON, BECAUSE WE'RE LEAVING!
If your gonna leave after he plays it, why shouldn't he wait till the very last song so you stay all night!

ah yes, the weekend.
saturday night was fun. lots of people, early crowd, actually had to start playin the good stuff early in the evening. only problems we really had were fights 4-5 times during the night. kinda to be expected. a group of soldiers got back from iraq, and in the next few weeks we'll probably see an increase in the fighting here when they find out who was sleeping with who. one of the many things to put up with when you have long deployments. oh well, welcome back boys and girls.

spent all your money on halloween did ya?
not everyone did, but most of them apparently dont have much left. last night was pretty slow, even for a sunday. good thing i was almost too tired to notice or care.
good news... we're seriously thinking about doing concerts again. so what if you dont break even or lose money on the deal.. they're just fun to have.
bad news... fall & winter, cold, wet, freezing weather. we're supposed to have a hot legs contest when the ladies arent wearing skirts?... someone didnt do the math.

wake up and smell the cuervo...
ever take a nap at work?...
i didnt, but my partner in crime did... and not due to cuervo. when ya pass out from walking pneumonia and end up under the counter for most of the night.. tis time to see the doctor. that was friday.. tonight he was back under the counter for awhile but was a little better.
so anyway. friday night - him passed out and pretty much left me on my own all night. still managed to have a pretty good night, but really could have used his help a bit for the second dance set of the night. i still muddled through, but it wasnt easy.
saturday night - we done had us a party. dancin, drinkin, no fightin, a lil pukin, lots of booty shakin... and that was in the first few hours. the rest of the night pretty much stayed like that. we had a larger crowd than on friday, probably about 100-150 more, and they were definitely in a party mood.

when was i here last?
sunday, oct 31... i love it when a plan falls apart.
most of the other clubs in the area had their halloween parties and costume contests on saturday. we had to be different and have ours on halloween itself. i dont think we had 500 people in the building but we still managed to have some fun, and give away $500 for the costume contest. it was the usual collection of lame costumes, halfway decent costumes, and the ones who always go all out for the day. lots of half naked people, and people who shouldnt have been half naked.
there was some behind the scenes drama going on but it was all club business that wasnt really going to affect how the night was going. our biggest issue other than that was the fact that we were all so tired that by the end of the night we were all staggering around tired.. then had to get up early enough to go pay bills on monday. caffiene... its not just for breakfast anymore.

"INSANE IN THE MEMBRANE..."
it was great. so what if we had two minor scuffles and had to kick out some underage drinkers, overall the night was just plain GREAT! crowd started showing up early and danced and partied all night long. and of course we had big daddy T goin nuts all night long. not that thats a bad thing, most of the time, but its okay.. i'm gonna invest in a helmet. first dance set of the night is usually not that long - not tonight it wasnt. second dance set - freakin excellent. last dance set of the night - it was pretty darn good, but damn... we were running out of things to play. and dont get me wrong, they were dancing to the country music all night long.
which reminds me - does George Straight EVER have a fight with his wife? and if so, does he just write a song for her as an apology? "sorry honey, love you, here's another song thats gonna go platinum so you can buy anything you want." you go george! cause its sure workin for us!
so anyway, we keep playin the music, keep in the crowd going, and trying not to lose our minds, and when we look up at the rest of the building at last call.. there are still over 800 people in the building. 3am was gettin real close on the clock before the majority of people started to head out. at 3 i was telling them that it was time for breakfast and time to recover for tomorrow night.
... sunday night - halloween. what the heck am i gonna be this year... hmmmmmmmmm

i love distractions.
short skirts, low cut tops, tight jeans, wonderful examples of mammalian development, and turkey-timers. if it weren't for that tonight i'd have gone nuts.
payday weekend, holiday weekend. this better be worth it. we're about to have a building full of rednecks dressed up for halloween... someone every year wears a sheep and overalls. at least we'll have some half dressed women to make up for it.

i got that not so fresh feeling...
i was doin good wed. night, really, up until around 10ish. then i dont know what happened. started feelin out of sorts. didnt help any that some lady threw up all over the floor.. but thats an occupational hazard. we still managed to have a pool tourney, and the wet t-shirt contest, despite not having a really large crowd on a wed. night. friday's and saturday's are still kickin ass, and wed. is still pretty good, but i am really dreading tonight. ass-end of the pay period and everyone is broke. staying positive about this is gonna be difficult but, i gotta try.
wish me luck...
wish me luck...

long see no time?
so as i look back, and see that its been waaay to long since i updated this thing, i realize that i should probably pay moe attention to whats going on. its been almost ten days since my last post and things have been a little weird.
FRIDAY 10-15, tim's birthday - i should have worn a helmet. and he should have gone straight to de-tox. if you had wrung him out you could have used his blood to power a car. remind me next year to but stock in a certain brand of tequila just prior to october.
SATURDAY 10-16, still recovering from tim's birthday...
SUNDAY 10-17, still recovering from tim's birthday....
WEDNESDAY 10-20, pretty much normal wednesday night people-wise, but its always the little behind the scenes details that screw things up for everyone. there's been a long running issue at the club about sound. i cant go into specific details yet, cause its gonna go to trial, but we've gone past the usual complaint about it being too loud in the club, to it being too loud in the neighborhood. so between management and the dj's, we have a lovely combination that makes for a whole lot of cranky. more on that later
THURSDAY 10-21, typical. nobody there... nobody caring... cranky dj.
FRIDAY 10-22, let me get this straight - if we play the music the way we normaly do on a friday night, we dont get told once to turn it down, the crowd stays nice and happy and dances all night long, and management doesnt bug us... WHAT?! other than that, friday night was a blast and a half, even with the microphone breaking, and the headphone jack connector breaking and breaking cd's.... NORMAL FRIDAY
SATURDAY 10-23, it took till after 1 for us to wake up. then it was game on.
SUNDAY 10-24, hardly anyone there, but they were in a party mood and i was bouncing off the walls. niiiiiice.
i promise to make a better effort to keep up with this thing, especially with the holidays approaching. next sunday is halloween, and with any luck i'll have some pics for the website. stay tuned.

i dont need rehab...
i work in a bar. all i have to do is look around me and have an excuse. been awhile since i posted, but its been fun. nice long holiday weekend for us, thursday was good for a change, friday was still friday, and saturday was cranky cop night. we ended up getting a sound complaint that lead to a nice fat ticket that the lawyers get to handle. turns out that it wasnt even our club making all the noise.. and we put out enough noise to make a 747 jealous. inside the building. outside is another story.
and zooming off to another topic, I LOVE DIGITAL CAMERAS AND HAVING A DJ BOOTH THAT IS THAT FAR IN THE AIR!!! gotta get more megapixels....
yall stay tuned. tim's b-day on friday. i gotta go find a helmet.

i am a happy camper
wow. what happened? i was all set to be nice and depressed or grumpy at the end of tonight. instead, i had a good time. even the crowd behaved itself for the most part. only one minor scuffle all night long. i love it when they come out to have a good time and dance. and they sure did - all night long! hopefully we didnt wear them out too much. we still have sunday...
sunday is my friday, and with any luck, we'll have some of the folks that were out last night that are in the same mood. it would be pretty cool if we had a couple hundred people out tomorrow night, but i wont hold my breath for it. someday when i look back on this, i'm gonna wonder what it was that made me stay for this long in the same club. and i'm gonna tell myself that it was nights like that.
gonna chill now and unwind alot. until next time...

"speak up.. i cant hear you" - my future
occupational hazard of the day - deafness. its gonna happen, i just dont know when. if you spend hours every night next to a booth monitor putting out more decibels than a 747, you start to notice that you just dont hear things the same. then again... not many people have much worth listening to anymore. i just watch their gums smack and try to decipher it. maybe its time to invest in some ear protection.
saturday - first weekend in the pay period. tonight should be pretty darn good. last night was. time to go recover.

sunday - sometimes they suck.. sometimes they dont.
post holiday blues at the tail end of a pay period. less than a hundred people in a bar that can hold over a thousand, looks sad. and people who aren't in a mood to party can really bring a dj down. sure, it's my job to make people have a good time and play them some really good music, but if i have to sit there all night and play music to people who just arent out there to dance, then what the hell am i doin? i'll tell ya - readin a book between songs and playing a little hand held poker game. it's not always that bad, but sometimes that little poker game keeps me sane.
lets look forward shall we? we've got the coming week ahead of us and the army is getting paid this week. should be nice.

miss me?
yeah.. been a little pre-occupied. past week has been interesting, from a "i'm gonna snap and lose control of my mental faculties" point of view. should i be getting extra pay to stay sober? this past week has almost been enough to start me drinking again. and thats NOT a good idea. cranky people i can handle, ignorant i can occasionally tolerate, but lately... AAAARRRRRGHHHH!!!!!!
ah well.. guess i'll go have another cigarette. i'll try to be a little more current with this thing.

a thursday where i dont feel so bad?
it was oddly nice for a thursday night. had people in a mood to party. i even felt good for a change. only really bummer part i had tonight was that i had some of the best mixes of my life in the booth tonight and there was hardly anyone to hear it at the end of the night.
and wednesday was pretty good too.
gotta go rest up.. holiday weekend.

knurd
the opposite of drunk = knurd. its a scary thing, this sobriety of mine. it makes me understand why i dont drink that much at all. i understand how some folks can have a few drinks and be nice and loosened up and drop some inhibitions - suddenly they're the life of the party. but when you drink to the point that you are the butt of everyone's jokes.. it might be time to re-evaluate you're lifestyle choices. i understand that this comes with maturity, and believe me i appreciate it when it happens in someone's life. but until then, hey.. keep payin my bills.. i love ya for it.

bite me its my monday
but i'm not cranky. well..maybe a little. slow wednesday comparativly speaking. then again it is past the middle of the pay period. the week end will be good, but thats a given. tomorrow is the dreaded thursday, and i dont wanna go. then again, i need the money. lets all have a pity party for me :-P
not much else to say tonight other than be careful out there. later.

headache + hyper = weirdly fun sunday.
saturday was good of course... no shocker there.
but sunday was oddly fun. with a raging headache that refused to accept the fact that i had taken over the usual dosage of tylenol, i was oddly hyper. playing music loud and with a bunch of energy on a sunday is not a usual thing for me. but i perservered. anyway, the night crept along after 1am and the crowd that was there began trickling out for various reasons, some people just cant survive on 3 hours of sleep, so anyway, stay tuned for more from this week.

a whole week of hiding out, eventful.. and un-eventful
wednesday, great. thursday.. not great.. only more so. friday.. more rain, lights going out from the storms, and a big headache again. more later.. right now.. tylenol...
Saturday, August 14, 2004
7 hours next to a booth monitor...and no tylenol...
headache?... yes. club was packed tho. fire marshal walking through the club before midnight is always a good sign.

GRRRRRR!!!!....
i'm not cranky, i just need a vacation... who's paying for it? not me, so i guess i dont get one. things are pretty much the same at the club, aside from the usual B.S. kinda looking forward to the weekend. dont know why.. just am.
behind the scenes drama - who needs it. seems you just cant work anyplace without someone having to get down on someone else. is it time to look for a new job? not just yet. if you're reading this and have been a dj in a fairly good size club... then you know what i mean. holding a thousand people in the palm of your hand, and making them feel GOOD is a pretty powerful feeling. screw taking drugs.. i got work to do.

okay.. it was friday, and i'm still not happy about it.
slow start tonight, followed by stead flow into the building. dance sets were just odd. my partner in crime wasnt feelin it or something. was still pretty good. lots of people in the building when we closed. tired now.. goin to bed
Thursday, August 05, 2004
well... that was weird
a wednesday night that was comparably slow to the last few - we must have hurt them a bit on that last weekend. still managed to get 7-800 in the building, but it was a weird crowd. they were kind of cranky too. three fights that i could see. how can you be cranky when you get to see a wet t-shirt contest?... i could sorta understand the fight that happened before the contest.. but i mean really... anyway, we're gonna get ready for tonights suckfest known as thursday. prepare for me to be cranky if i post afterwork tonight.

recovery process..
sunday was just slow enough that i didnt have to recover from saturday by doin it cold turkey. not too busy for a sunday, but still busy enough to make me feel better about being there. all in all a pretty great weekend rounded out.
monday was a pain in the butt though. too tired to do anything, but watch movies... more later. gotta recover some more

saturday...the legend continues
what can i say?... we still had about 400 people in the building at 3am dancing to "purple rain". where do we go from here?... we're gonna need a bigger building. it was a typical saturday up to a point. started kinda slow.. then everyone who came in the door...stayed. good thing i get to chill a bit tonight. i need the rest.

drunk people + money = gas for the car?
end of the pay period, short on pocket money, and i dont care what i play. makes it less traumatic to play a song i dont want to. that and they throw money at me to do it. such is a sunday.

my favorite drug returns - sleep deprivation
saturday night, and 5 hours sleep = one hell of a night at work. semi-slow start, and then they started coming in. we actually had more people in the building at 10:00pm than there were all of thursday night. there was a line almost the length of the building around 11:00 and they just kept coming in. we were playing bad songs to get people off the dance floor again so we can sell more alchohol, and then playing really good songs to relieve pressure and crowding in the rest of the building. the dance floor at 2:30 in the morning was still packed during the last dance set of the night. lots of energy in the building, and lots of happily inebriated people havin a blast. and the most amazing part of it all was that i was able to stay awake through the whole thing without falling asleep, and thinking creativly.. and i owe it all to AMP. thank you mt dew for creating it. and of course to JOLT COLA as well.. thanks guys.
more tomorrow if i get the chance.. until then.. time for replace some of that energy. later kids.

the week in review - more or less
wednesday, WTF?!?... we got confused and thought it was friday or saturday? bigger, rowdier, and fun, described wednesday night, compared to thursday and friday so far. the place was packed in the middle of the week.. go figure. we ended up having the wet t-shirt contest after 1am, and then hardly any time for music afterwards. and there were a few cranky people in the building too.. 5 fights that i saw, and more outside that i heard about. all in all t'was a pretty fun night.
thursday, blah... as usual
friday, let the fun begin. as usual we didnt wake up till after midnight. that just makes the rest of the night more fun. one heck of a dance set after 2am tonight... we surprised a lot of rednecks tonight. tomorrow -the rest of the world.

who me?... cranky?..nooo
I'm not cranky... i'm just me.
alot of people at the club think i am cranky, mean, or just look at them that way. far from it.. i just dont express myself the way they think i should. granted i should at least act like they have something important to tell me and that it interests me to no end, but after being there for 5 years i just can't. now normally i wouldnt make much comment on this, just shrug it off, but for some reason lately its gotten worse. i dont want to look like an idiot with one of those oh so commercial insincere smiles that you see and a major chain restaurant, to me thats just insulting to the customer, but i suppose i could make an effort to be a bit friendlier.
oh yeah.. and about last night. really good friday... played bad songs to get people to stop dancing and increase sales at the bar. fo shizzle!

sleep deprivation kicks ass!
yes thats right kids, lack of sleep makes a dj do weird things. for instance, playing a song about drinking.. no.. wait. i get paid to do that... never mind.. i need a nap................................................

i dont want to talk about it..
typical thursday, so i wont talk about it.
time to talk about something else for a change - Bartender's and Waitstaff. i've seen them come and go. some last, some dont. i give them their due, night after night, making money hand over fist on those good nights, listening to the drunks and bar flies and weirdo's who think they actually have a sypathetic ear, and taking crap from management ( dont get me wrong.. thats managements job - "management's crap is the lubrication that gets shit done"). sure their feet hurt at the end of the night. thats what epsom salts are for. mine hurt too, but then again.. i dont care if mine hurt. sure they can get involved with the drama at work, and in the bar, and at breakfast after work... wait. can't get involved... promised i wouldn't. damn. oh well.
i tease them, joke with them, work with them, and try to make them a little money in the the process. they do work for their money, just in a different way. nice workin with y'all.

when wednesday seems like saturday night...
Payday wednesday night. almost a thousand people. only one fight that didnt last long and was late enough in the night that it hardly counted. wet t-thirt contest was kinda fun. pool tournament was pretty good turn-out wise. all said and done.. it was a good night. not to mention the weekly thong display in the dj booth.. but thats another story.

saturday & sunday
WHOS YO DADDY!
hehehehe. saturday was goood. typical night but without any fights and alot of people having a blast. and sunday was oddly fun too. dont ask me why but it was. people coming out on a sunday to party is always a good thing... people coming out to party on a sunday and staying is an even better thing!

so nice to have a friday again.
started off a bit weird, redecorated the booth, moved all the cd's, told bad jokes, and then got ready for the night. was a nice crowd for most of the night, but there's always someone who's got to screw things up. fight on dance floor after 2:10, ended up with one fo the floormen getting his nose broken. ah, the joys of working in a bar. so far i've been lucky, worst thats happened to me was slipping on a floor, and wrenching my arm after someone started fighting in the parking lot last year. not bad after being there that long. time for bed y'all... saturday...

Post Holiday Blues
slow this week, everyone is broke after the holiday weekend. we'll see how tomorrow night goes, but i'm dreading sunday already. i think the highlight of my night was losing a bet with myself. that or having stripper friends come and see me.. thats always a bonus.
time for bed. see ya when i see ya.

what DOES a DJ do on his day off?...
if he's lucky, he gets to SLEEP! but sometimes lack of sleep can be fun too. this week it was family time, playing with son and fiance', all day long. today its gonna be vegetating time, that special time just for me to sit back and do NOTHING! gotta love it. this coming week at work should be okay. except for thursday of course.
eventually someone is going to read this and leave a comment or something. guess i need to promote it a bit more... or not. i dunno.

party, party, party, party....
well hi kids how ya been?
we been busy.. holiday week, regular business, and the joys of life. hope your having a fun 4th of july. we have been having a fun week - busy night on wednesday, busiest night this week so far actually, and the rest of the week has been surprisingly slow compared to what it could have been. tomorrow night will go either way, and if its busy i wont complain, but it might not be as busy as we hope.
other than that, i think that i might be okay. gonna see if i can put some of our play logs on here and preserve a night for prosterity.. or incredulity.. either way.

why am i so tired???
who me tired? um.. yeah. not so much because i didnt get much sleep to make up for the lack of sleep during the week, but because i ate some really, really, really great barbecue! there is a little place up the road from the club that has some of the best BBQ i have ever had. they have it down to a science.. no.. an art. had to buy some extra chicken to share with co-workers and some of the customers. mmmm... chicken and beer.
off topic - cranky employees make work lots of fun (can you hear the sarcasm?), but i dont recommend keeping them that way. they start to think about quiting. not me.. just some i know. its the same the world over. you work for some folks, and sometimes gotta wonder what the hell they were thinking.
next week, the long stretch between pay periods.. fun and games for all

blah blah blah...
yeah, you already know thursday night was lame.. but as usual tonight made up for it.
pretty darn good night tonight altogether, was hard to keep people off the dance floor after 10:00. had to play some total B.S. songs just to try and sell some beer, and get different people on the dance floor. other than that once we woke up tonight it was good.

some days you just dont know
a friday night that was nice and busy in the club.. except for one thing - they just were not in a mood to dance to anything i wanted to play, or that they requested. thats messed up. other than that it was a normal friday :1100 drunk rednecks buying alot of alchohol. (i'm starting to not like that dont tip the dj's rule)
bonus rant on on people under 21 who want to buy or drink alcohol - IF YOU WANT TO DRINK - VOTE! THE RULES AINT GONNA CHANGE UNLESS YOU CHANGE THEM. QUIT WHINING IF YOU ARENT GOING TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT!

well the first two days of the week went by pretty tamely, only one fight so far this week, decent wet t-shirt contest, good crowd on wednesday, better than it has been crowd on thursday. we'll see how friday and saturday go.

my friday... your sunday... so there
ah.. the end of the week. time for two days of decompression, resting, vegetating, NOT DOING ANYTHING.
monday - woke up too early, ate dinner at our favorite thai place with one of her friends from out of town, sat in recliner and relaxed. got up, went to parts store and bought parking light, changed parking light, went to get car inspected and oil changed (left with nice new oil cap - replaced free cause they broke it). get home and relax some more, then get out lawn mower, fill tank, mow one strip.. mower dies. put mower away, chat with her friend some more before she leaves, go inside out of rain. vegetate for 5 hours. go to wal-mart, buy stuff, come home. play on computer, watch rest of house pass out eventually. sleep.
tuesday - wake up around noon with acid burning throat from spicy pork rinds before bed, wait for rolaids to work, play on computer till sleepy again, wake up at 6, vegetate all night long... i love my days off.
P.S. saturday kicked ass!

i get paid for this?!
i tell ya kids.. a friday like last night almost makes up for two thursdays. lots of fun, lots and lots of good lookin women, and a crowd that had fun till we turned on the lights at 3:00am. all we have to do now is do it again tonight.
that's not as easy as it sounds. the mental stress and energy expended with rapid creative thought can really wear a person down. thankfully there is a cure! jolt, amp and tylenol now this may not be the healthiest combo of things.. but hey.. whatever works to keep 1,100 people happy at the same time.
if anyone needs me i'll be bouncing off the walls in a bit. have fun

my how time flies...
everyone have a happy holiday?... too bad. i did.
sunday, may 30th - day before memorial day duh! - a lot of people had monday off so they came out to the club to have some fun. and they did. so did i until about 1:30am, then i hit a wall of fatigue that i just couldnt get around.. felt like i was fallin asleep while the rest of the building was having a party. oh well, i survived so it was all good. the high point of my night was during the second dance set of the night... tim came up and mixed a dance set that blew my mind. i stand in awe.. or sit in awe. anyway, getting up to wednesday night (last night), we had a pretty decent wet t-shirt contest, and the usual pool tournament, had a fight on the dance floor that was over pretty darn quick, and the usual assortment of drunks, cranky rednecks, and party go-ers. such is life

"if you dont want to party.. then you should stay home"
no... really... stay home
i'm cranky i am. if you come out to the club come out to party.. not to get stupid. underage drinking - sure we know its gonna happen we try hard to prevent it. we watch for it. we get them out of the building as fast as we can catch them and send them on their merry way. BUT, if you're not bright enough to know that you might just have to prove who you are when you get caught - thats YOUR fault. when the young lady is asked for her I.D. and she gives false I.D. not just to us.. but to the police officer - SHE WINS AN ALL EXPENSES PAID NIGHT IN THE CITY LOCK UP AND A LOVELY PAIR OF BRACELETS! we love to have a bar full of people having a good time, we dont love these dimwits who only think how cool they are to have a drink in the club, knowing its illegal, and probably not knowing that it could cost someone their job, give them a criminal record, cost them a crapload of money, and pretty much ruin their day. does this mean we come down hard on minors drinking in the club. not always.. usually its enough to just send them home. but if you get stupid with us.. we gonna get stupid with you. and i dont like you in the club enough to go to jail for ya. okay.. rants over. friday was fun otherwise.. more later

Some days you just cant...period.
Thursday. thursdays used to be a really fun night. unfortunatly, we have a problem called complacency. when you're number one, you have a tendency to relax and just ride the wave. problems is.. every wave has a crest.. and a trough. thursdays are dragging us down and its starting to show in other days of the week. no one is really putting two and two together, but i've noticed it. guess its up to us to try and make it better? maybe
if i sound a bit stressed out it's cause i was. nothing can mess up a dj's mind worse than an empty dance floor. especially if its a song you know they like. you can play a song one night and have the floor full and the same song the next night will kill your dance floor. happens.. happened to me last night. so yeah, i was stressin'. oh well, tonight is friday and its a payday, four day, holiday, weekend. this could be good. stay tuned

Ahhh.. Wednesday
Just another wednesday night at the club... a decent amount of players in the pool tournament, and for a change, most of the girls in the wet t-shirt contest were good looking. what a job.
the only downside to last night was the start of yet another bout with my allergies. wanna have some real fun kids? try to talk on the mic with both sinus's draining down the back of your throat, and out of your nose. aside from the coughing fits, and the drainage, and the feeling like crap all night - i still managed to have fun.

Hi Kids!... How are you today?
okay so i dont always post right after work, but lets face it - on a sunday night when you dont have that many customers in the building, you really have to work at it to get people on the dance floor. so there i was, sitting up there watching, when all of a sudden i realized we weren't having the sunday night singing contest, and there were people still in the building and they were having a good time for the most part. time for a dance set, so i play a set on a sunday night that was 40+ minutes long.. and if that wasnt strange enough... they stayed even when we didnt have the contest. we still managed to have the pool tournament, even though there werent that many people in it. so all in all it wasnt a spectacular sunday.. and it wasnt a really terrible sunday.
all we have to do know kids is wait for wednesday - wet t-shirt contest!... i love my job

Summer time blues...
Have you ever had one of those days where you just couldn't wake up at work? That pretty much described tonight at the club. DJ's feed off the energy of a crowd in a symbiotic relationship, and as I said in an earlier post - when the weather gets warmer, the crowd comes in later. Tonight, the main body of customers came in after 10, and the crowd that was there before that was just not in the mood to dance. It took us forever to wake up and get the crowd where we wanted it: essentially awake and ready to dance their ass's off. By 12 we were almost awake. By 1:30 we were ready to roll. And did we ever!
a lot of people wouldn't think that a remix of "the twist" would go over good in a country bar but we had a couple of hundred people on the dance floor twisting and dancing to the song while we sang along on the mics in the booth. Follow that up with Clay Walker's cover of "La Bamba", and ya got a floor that's really jumping if they're in the mood for it.. And they were. By the time we started the last dance set of the night (hip hop in a country bar?!.. Drum tootin. Them good old boys love to get funky. Especially when they get to watch their women shake their booty) we still had 5-600 customers in the bar. We stay open late on the week ends - Thursday, Friday, and Saturday - after serving hours so that we can get the crowd a little more sober to drive and so that not everyone is leaving at the same time.. It really cuts down on fender benders in the parking lot. And more importantly it actually prevents a lot of fights. So anyway, there we were with 400 people on the dance floor at 2:30 in the morning with more getting on the floor with every song and no sign of them wanting to stop.. And hardly anyone leaving the club. Its kinda strange to have to play a song they just don't get, cause you need them to get off the dance floor... Guess we we're doing something right.
We finished out the night on a really good high note. Now all we have to do is survive Sunday.. wish us luck

Okay so I aint perfect...
Reading this after getting a modicum of sleep today I realized that I should probably start using the spell checker. And format it a bit better. Forgive me in the meantime.. I'm just starting this thing. Progressing right along - its time to get ready for work. Another fun filled night of making everyone feel like I'm there just for them.
just another friday night...
survived another friday night at the club...
not a bad night really, just one of those nights where i just plain didn't feel it. sure we still had a decent sized crowd, but they came out late. happens every year when the weather gets warm and the customers spend a lot of time at the lake or wherever. most people dont really head for the club till the sun goes down. we had the usual mix of people tonight, and a few that are getting to be more noticeable - wounded vets on leave. some of the guys are coming back from iraq or afghanistan with injuries. not totally unexpected
now for the part where i get to rant a little bit
i realize most people listen to the radio and think.. "wow, thats a really cool song" when they come in to the club and ask us to play it, they act surprised that we dont - just because your song is a good song to listen to DOESN'T MEAN ITS A GOOD SONG TO DANCE TO! or to play in a club. and neither myself or the other dj look anything like carson daly... christina aguilara, britany spears, b2k, etc... fine if you're driving down the road and there's nothing else on.. or sitting at home listening to the radio.. but dont ask us to play that teeny bopper crap!
okay.. rant over
stay tuned kids.. tomorrow is saturday!

Professional Redneck Babysitting - chapter wun y'all...
ah yes.. the introduction
oh where does it start? oh, about 5 years ago. I began working in what was the number 1 nightclub in town as a veritable novice, tryin to keep up with the fun loving hectic pace of working two jobs, and staying sane... more on that later. so anyway, this blog is going to be about the life and times of a regular guy working in a nightclub that happens to be a country bar. even better, a country bar in a military town - this leads to all kinds of fun and games, especially these days. and if you've never lived in a military town or an area where the local commerce revolves around uncle sam's payday, then you might not understand the joys of checking the payday calender from the local bank and predicting just how many customers you can expect, and just how bad (or good!)your night is going to be.
the customers...
In the last 5 years i've made a lot of friends who've come and gone, whether it be from deploying to another base, or going back home to stay, or as sometimes happens, losing their life while serving their country. I've seen them at their best and worst, seen them deal with all of life's ups and downs, from marriage to births to even some deaths. they really are mostly a great bunch of people - even when they're sober.
the employees...
5 years of watching people come and go. nightclubs have a high turnover rate, and when many of them are part-timers getting some extra cash while still in the army and students or just regular folks needing a job, you see alot of different faces come thru. some do stick around and they find out that while its not all "party yourself silly while working" you can really have a blast there while making some good money. bartenders of course make the most (if they're really good at it), waitress's make pretty good money on a nightly basis if they have the right attitude, the floormen, well, they dont make as much but they have a different mindset there - most of them like to hang out at the club anyhow and its just a bonus that they get paid to be there (plus the occasional chance to get physical - but thats life in any place that serves alcohol). then there's us - two dj's playin music for a really mixed crowd of every shade of redneck in the area - the wannabe redneck who never listened to a country song willingly then found out that it was kinda nice, the part-time redneck who listens to country on and off again, and the redneck who grew up listening to country from the day he was born. we get 'em all.. and then some. we try to make sure we can keep them all happy and dancing all night, with a minimum of fighting (crowd control -making them all dance and forget for awhile that some guy pissed them off when he scuffed his boots, bumped his drink, looked at him/her, or talked to his girl/her guy.) it works better than you think, especially when they never realize whats happened and end up having a really great night.
thats gonna be about all for tonight... its 4 am. time to cook somethin up for whatever meal this is.
