a time and a place for everything
see previous post for background on this one.
so i figured i'd save time and show up in a bad mood and hope things would get better. people-wise things were better, but of course things went sour later in the evening. drama, and then fights during the after party.
this has been bugging for weeks now - if we have idiots that fight when we're playing dance music and you make me switch to slow country because they're fighting, then shouldnt we start playing dance music when they start fighting when there is country playing? what school of logic is that again? punish the rest of the building, just absolutly destroy the party mood, because a group gets stupid?
somebody explain? before i lose whats left of my mind...

you don't get to judge unless you do my job
there's two people that can tell me i do a good job. me, and the collective individual known as the customers. if they're dancing and having a good time - i'm doin something right. if they're leaving, if they're just sitting there drinking, if they're yelling at me because the music isnt what they like, then i need to do something else with the music while still keeping to the club's format.
i understand when it's slow, and i understand during those times of the month when they arent going to come out. but everytime someone higher than my paygrade gets a compliment or comment about the music from people that DO NOT spend enough time or money in the bar to make a difference, wants to say "good job" i get really nervous.
good job means people stay in the club and have a party. not leave in groups because they dont like whats playing and are not going to wait for it to change.
stick to what you're supposed to do - glad hand the customers, ride herd on the waitstaff and try to keep them sober and your idiot floormen who are too busy chasing tail and joking around with their friends to pay attention and do their damn jobs.

Just seeing if this works... and it does
so. how ya been? i've been a little weird, a little stressed. nothing new there tho. last post was in april, and it wasnt what i would call a good time fun feelin post. more like - dear dr. phil: things suck, and so does your advice.
well, guess what? things got better. straightened out some stuff, got my head almost right for awhile (personal issues... it's all good) and havent had to put up with as much B.S. as i used too. that and being voted number 1 nightclub for 2008 was nice too.
we've had a couple concerts since, and the last one was this past thursday - Randy Rogers Band with Wade Bowen for an opener - i have to say i was impressed. plenty of Bowen fans in front of the stage singin' along with his songs, and they played for a quite awhile for an opening act. in-between acts tho i didn't have to do much except play with the lights. instead they had Rogers IPOD plugged in to their sound system running a playlist. imagine my surprise when the first song out was "jump around" by House of Pain? Rogers gets up on that stage finally and just blew the doors off. an artist on stage feeds off the energy in a crowd. if the crowd doesnt feel it - it's gonna be a short concert. Rogers played for almost 2 hours with the crowd loving every damn minute, singin' along and having a great time. you could just tell he was on the stage just plain having FUN.

got some more i wanna get in here, but we'll wait till later.
it's nap time.

okay so i get lazy and distracted
been busy, been working, been stressed.
lots goin on. new this that and the other thing. some good, some bad, some i haven't made up my mind about. and of course the stress levels keep jumping around like crazy. and not just at work.
more concerts on the way - tracy byrd jan 20th and tracy lawrence on feb 14th (had to pull some serious strings for that one) trying to keep energy levels in the building while still playing some of the crap thats been coming out of nashville... and texas. once upon a time i could play all night long and have that floor packed with people dancing to country, not just the dance sets. granted, we lost a great friend in Mr. Bell, but without a dance instructor we are really having problems. people dont know how to dance anymore. the music coming out lately has been too fast, too slow, or just plain BAD! texas country? 90% of texas country is not worth playing in a bar with a dancefloor and is more suited to a bar with cowshit and blood on the floor and a bunch of guys standing around, beer in hand, goin "yep, that there's a good song" is it a good song because it has artistic merit and makes people feel and want to dance?... or is it a good song because it's by a guy from texas?
and as far as classic country goes. if i cant play what the younger crowd will stay for and have to play crap... well FUBAR all over again.
cant win but i'll go down fightin' one way or the other.
